Sylvester Augustus McDonald was born on January 3, 1937 in Barracks Road, Westmoreland, Jamaica W.I. He grew up with his paternal grandmother in Darliston, Westmoreland, where he went to school. In or about 1962, he started travelling and working as a migrant farmer picking apples in New York, citrus fruits and cutting sugarcane in Florida.
Then 1974 saw him transition to a permanent life in the United States where he did odd jobs painting houses, he later went on to work for Lender’s Bagels where he worked as a dough mixer for over 20 years until his retirement. Sylvester was a very dedicated worker, he walked from New Haven to Lenders Bagel on the Boston Post Road each morning, in all kind of weather. He was an excellent cook who made the best soups, a farmer with a stamina to work from sun up to sundown.
Sylvester was a member of the Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church of New Haven, where he was member of the adult Sunday school for which he was on time each Sunday he would visit the sick in the hospital and anyone from the Jamaican community, and bring a meal to those who were sick and shut in. There was always an extra plate of food for anyone who would come by unexpectedly to visit.
He led a humble life. Sylvester was a classy dresser who wore fine linens and had a great affinity for the ladies and loved his daughters Allison and Faye and his grandchildren Makayla and Matthew. Sylvester leaves to mourn his loving daughters Allison McDonald Duhaney, Arlena Faye Davis (FL) grandchildren Makayla Presha Davis, Matthew Duhaney; son-in-law’s Derrick Duhaney, Precely Davis Jr.; siblings Gladys Williams (England); Gloria Turner (Jamaica); Yvonne Turner-Ebanks (Grand Cayman); Leibert (Glen) Turner, cousins in the United States, Jamaica and England and his favorite Byron McDonald and wife Jennifer (Jamaica); best friend Albert Lee (New Haven) of 52 years. Sylvester was predeceased by a brother Rohan Turner, sisters Jennifer Turner and Velma McDonald.
