ANITA FRANCINE (DOUGLASS) COTTON 9/13/1949 – 6/11/2024

Anita was born in New Haven, Connecticut on Tuesday, September 13, 1949 to Harriet Florence Coles and the late Francis Edward Douglass. She graduated from Wilbur Cross High School then attended Business School and applied that education to her long-time employment with the State of Connecticut at Connecticut Mental Health Center.

Anita knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was most recently a member of the Vox Church in New Haven. Anita’s inherent desire to be of service to others was evident through her
post-retirement work at the New Haven Job Center and within her volunteer role as conservator for people in need. She volunteered to represent her senior community in the Towers at Tower Lane in many ways, including tenant advisory board member, tax preparer, and participation in the Java Music Group. Anita also enjoyed activities with friends at the Atwater Senior Center. She was a very accomplished woman, with a Bachelor of Business Administration Accounting and Certification in Medical Assisting from accredited institutions, as well being a Graduate from Rock Tabernacle Bible Institute. Anita was also a literacy volunteer for the sighted and taught the visually challenged how to read the bible in braille.

Anita was a vibrant, energetic, hands-on grandmother and great grandmother. She was always a call away to help out family however she could, particularly with painting and electronics. In her leisure time, Anita loved to crochet gifts for her family and for vending with her daughter at craft fairs. Her favorite place to visit and relax was the Lavender Farm. She was a Peter Falk fanatic who impressed upon her family to watch Columbo whenever they could. Her love and care for her children will be missed beyond what words can express.

Anita leaves her legacy with her mother Harriet Douglass, one daughter Karizma Burgess Schloss, grandchildren Divinia (Larry) Hardy, Clifford (Brianna) Schloss, Jr, and Kenadie Schloss; great grandchildren DiviAna K. Hardy, Lyra Anita Austin, and Klair K. Schloss; her loving siblings Francis Douglass, Michelle (Yusef) Ahmad, Lamont Douglass, and Jacqueline Douglass; step-daughter Shaneta Cotton; as well as bonus brothers and sisters, beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. Anita is predeceased by her father, uncles Henry, Walter and Leonard Coles, aunt Gertrude Sargent, ex-husbands Eddie Cotton and James Burgess, Jr, and bonus sister Carol Douglass.
