Hazel Lee Tart-Carter

October 12, 1949 - June 8, 2021

Burial Date: June 16, 2021

A celebration of life for Hazel will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 from 10 to 11am viewing 11am service at Mt. Hope Temple Church 555 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven. Condolences may be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.

Hazel Lee Tart -Carter was born on October 12, 1948, in Scotland County, North Carolina to the late Ben and Eula Mae Tart.  She was educated in the Scotland County School System.  In 1970, she relocated to New Haven, Connecticut with her family.  She continued her education in Connecticut, earning her high school diploma from Hamden High School in 2004.  She also attended the United Christian Bible Institute and earned a Christian Worker Certificate and Evangelism Certificate.

Hazel married Willie Carter on September 17, 1994.  She worked at Burndy’s Factory in New Haven and was a committed childcare provider until she retired in 2010.

Hazel was a faithful and active member of Mount Hope Temple for many years, under the leadership of Bishop Jeremiah Covington, Bishop John C. Wright, and Elder Robert W. Kinney, Sr.  She was always willing to serve and help in whatever capacity she could.  She served as vice president of the Usher Board, advisor to the junior ushers, and on the Pastor’s Aide Committee.  In addition, she served as a trustee of the church, and she faithfully fed the less fortunate through her many years of service to the Mount Hope Recovery Center Food Pantry.

Hazel loved life and people.  “Mama Hazel”, as she was affectionally known by many, had a giving heart and she would give her last in support of others.  Everyone knew, however, that Hazel didn’t play. She said what she meant, and she meant what she said.  She would give you “that look” and you knew not to mess with her.  However, everyone also knew that she had a heart of gold.  She would often call family and friends just to check in on them and make sure they were doing okay.  And her love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ was evident to those she loved.  Her favorite saying was “I Won’t Complain.”

Hazel was predeceased by her parents Ben and Eula Mae Tart; brothers Ben Tart (Julia), Reverend Willie Tart (Eutha Mae), William Tart (Ruth) and sisters Catherine Pegues, Isabella McKee, Lillie B. Harris, Odessa Tart, and Eleanor Tart Royster.

Hazel leaves to cherish her precious memories: her husband Willie Carter; son Mark Stroud of New Haven, CT; grandchildren Mark Schymon Stroud, Sania Lee Stroud, Destinee, Isaiah, Malachi, and Emmanuel King; brothers Carl J. Tart (Gloria) of Kingstree, SC and Willie B. Tart of New Haven, CT; sisters Mary Williams of New Haven, CT and Mae McKoy (Bill) of Staten Island, NY; a special daughter Ida Kazee; Goddaughter Mariah Watson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family, and friends.
