Janie Hammett

A Celebration of Janie’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at Bible Gospel Center, 143 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden at 11am. Viewing in Church from 10am-11am.

Janie Hammett was born on July 27, 1947 to the late Elijah Hammett Sr., and Jannie Pearson in Manning, South Carolina. She transitioned peacefully after a long illness alongside with her daughter at her daughter’s residence in Hamden, CT.

Janie received her education at Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, SC. She was on the school’s basketball and track teams. She was known to have a gifted left hand for the basketball team games. She was a point guard in basketball and loved to watch Super Bowl and the NBA finals.

Janie attended Triumph the Church & Kingdom of God in Christ of Davis Station where as at the age of 19 years old she accepted the Lord as her Savior. She was an active member and sung in the choir.

In 1967, she relocated to New Haven, CT after graduating high school to follow her newly married sister, Ethel Dixon.

Janie was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in North Haven, CT as a machine operator for over 13 years and had to take a permanent leave due to an injury. Janie was also a licensed Foster Parent and President of the Putnam Townhouse where she lived in Hamden, CT.

Janie was an active member of Bible Gospel Center, Hamden CT. She served as an usher and greeted people with her beautiful smile.

Janie was known for her decorating skills whether if it was her own townhouse or randomly decorating her daughter’s home without her knowledge and consent. She had a contagious smile and robust of laughter that would make anyone laugh with her. She greatly loved her grands, but the one heart strength was Mont-Mont her favorite. She enjoyed shopping, reading and mostly spending time with family.

Preceding her in death are her parents, brother-Elijah Hammett, Jr; Brother-in-law Deacon William Earl Dixon; Nephew Nathan Earl Dixon; Niece Michella Hammett; Sister-in-law AnN Hammett; Special Aunt Annie Bell Wright.

Janie leaves to forever cherish her memory daughter LaTrease Murray (Curtis Wells) Hamden CT, Special Daughters Wendy Gass West Haven CT, Valerie (James) Wise New Haven CT, Son Keith (Karli) Hammett Middletown CT, Sister Ethel Ernestine Hammett Dixon; Grandchildren Tramont Murray AKA her heart strength Mont-Mont, Breonna Counsel AkA Cage, Terel Counsel AKA Relly, Shianne Turner, Christien Hammett, and Elijah Speller; 5 Great Grandchildren; Brothers Johnny Hammett, Levi (Deborah) Hammett, Willis Hammett (Mary Murray), Sampson Hammett and Walter A. Prince of Columbia, SC; Sister-in-law Hattie Hammett; Special Nephews Ottis Dixon and Jesse Dixon; Special Friends Mary Blount, Patricia Senior, Marie Ellison, Astoria Ridley, Donna Benson, Theresa Jackson, Maxine McClam, Rosa Kindell and Joyce Holley and host of other relatives and friends.
