A Celebration of Joseph’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 in Colonial Funerals, 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden, Connecticut at 10am. Viewing from 9am-10am in Colonial. Burial will follow the services at State Veteran’s Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, Connecticut.

On April 8th 1937, Joseph Albert Gadsden was born to the late Richard and Henrietta Gadsden in Bonneau, SC. Joe departed this life early Tuesday morning February 6th, 2024. Joe received his education in the public schools of Berkeley County SC, where he received his High School diploma from Russellville High School on May 30th 1956. On May 2, 1960, he enlisted in the US Army where he remained until April 30, 1962 when he was honorably discharged.

On December 18th 1963, at the age of 26, he married the love of his life, who preceded him in death, the lovely Shirley Ann Giles in New York City, NY. Joe was employed at Pratt and Whitney where he retired after many years of service. Joe was a faithful member of Sweet Hope Church. Joe never encountered a stranger and was the kind of man that when he talked you were sure to listen. His yes meant yes and his no meant no.

He leaves to mourn his passing: Three sons: Anthony (Ella) Ravenell of St. Stephen, SC, Arnold (Mary) Gadsden of Columbia, SC, Sheldon (Linda) Gadsden of Greensboro, NC and one daughter: Shawanna Monroe of New York, NY. 10 grandchildren: Pierre, Quentin, Sharonda, Brittany, April, Dewan, Damien, Danaria, Nathaniel, and Dannie. 17 great grandchildren. One brother: Christopher Gadsden; Saint Stephen, SC. Two brothers in law; Octavio Baez and Ralph Banks both of Washington D.C. Three sisters in law: Jackie Giles of Saint Stephen, SC, Geneva Banks, and Marie Baez, both of New York, NY. Special Friends: JC and Shirley Brown. Special Cousins: John Wright, Albert (Anetta) Gadsden, Terry (Cheryl) Gethers, and Sherry (Tony) Gethers-Guess, Special Nieces: Wanda (William) Pressley, Sabrina Franklin, and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. One brother, Richard Gadsden Jr., preceded Joe in death.
