Joseph T. Whedbee Sr., age 98 passed away peacefully at home on Dec 24, 2020. He was born on Jan 30, 1922 in Gates County, North Carolina, to the late Cleopaus and Annie C. Baysmore Whedbee. He was for 67 years, the loving husband of the late Mattie L Holmes Whedbee.
At age 6, Joe and family moved from North Carolina to Waterbury, CT where he attended Webster, Slocum, and Russell grammar schools. He graduated with his diploma from Leavenworth High School at age 19. Over his lifetime, he was employed by US Tack & Novelty Co where he was a drilling machinist, American Brass & Co in Waterbury, and Naugatuck (CT) Chemical Company, a leading maker of rubber products. Joe spent most of his employment history in the dry cleaning business as a garment presser. He was for a time, the owner of Johnny On The Spot Dry Cleaners in Torrington, CT. The last dry cleaner he worked for before his retirement was Eagle Cleaners in Wolcott, CT.
Joe aspired to become a professional boxer and had several amateur matches. However, a burst ear drum prevented him from moving forward in his boxing career. It also prevented him from entering the armed forces. Joe enjoyed music including playing guitar and the harmonica. His favorite singing group was The Ink Spots.
Joe was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1955. His greatest passion was talking to others about the Bible and its promises of everlasting life on a paradise earth. He had served as an Elder in the Waterville Congregation, in Waterbury. Joe was sustained by the prospect of being re-united with his deceased loved ones in the coming “new world” under the Kingdom of God.
Joe leaves to cherish his memory two daughters Janet L. Blackwell (husband Ronald) of Honey Brook, PA and Adrienne Brown, (husband Leonard) of Waterbury, and one son Joseph Whedbee Jr. (wife Vicky) of Waterbury. He was predeceased by a son Dante Whedbee.
He is survived by 2 sisters Annie Dawes of Monroe, NC and Lenora White (husband Wallace) of Waterbury. He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Whedbee and a brother, Cleopaus Nathaniel Whedbee.
He is also survived by grandchildren, Mark Thomas, Eric Blackwell, Joseph Troy Whedbee, Renata Pierce, Adriana Ranet Moore, Angelo R Moore, Domingos-Dinis Moore Brown, Marchel Moore Brown, Charmaine Brown, Lenise-Nicole Brown, Lorenzo Brown, Leonardo Salvatore Brown. 22 great grandchildren. A host of nephews and nieces with special note of niece Sandra E. Burke Ph.D who over a period of several years devoted much time and resources in compiling and producing The Family History Book for which Joseph expressed many thanks and gratitude.
