A Celebration of Lawrence’s life will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 12:30pm at Colonial Funerals 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden CT 06514. Viewing at Colonial from 11am-12:30pm. Condolences may expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.

On June 23, 2024, our beloved Lawrence Christopher Grey, 48, affectionately known as “Chris” departed this earthly life on June 23, 2024, in New Haven, Connecticut to a better peaceful home.

Chris was born on March 7, 1976, to Jayne Schank Babcock and Winston Grey (deceased). He was also predeceased in death by his beloved Grandfather, Dr. George P. Schanck Jr., MD of Orlando and Mona of Winter Park, Florida.  Growing up in Florida, Chris was a faithful member of Ward Chapel AME Church. Chris sang for Walt Disney World when he was a middle school and high school student. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia.

After graduating, Chris worked for Accenture, a top management consulting firm, with a focus in Training Design and Development. After two years at Accenture, he was recruited to be the Training and Client Education Manager for Derivion, an internet start-up company based out of Toronto. In 2001, he began a quest to influence and impact education for diverse students by working in higher education admissions for 3 of the top colleges and universities in the US: Emory University, Sewanee University of the South, and Yale University.

In 2014, Chris switched his career focus to teaching in public schools after witnessing countless numbers of students from urban public school districts denied admissions to top-tier colleges and universities. He began working as a long-term substitute with Kelly Educational Staffing and was hired into the Teacher Ascent Program (TAP) with Bethany Community School in the Spring of 2015. He also worked as a summer camp counselor with the JCC of Greater New Haven. Prior to joining Park City Prep Charter School, he taught for 2 years at Achievement First’s Amistad Academy Elementary School in New Haven, CT.

Chris was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Caucus of Emory Black Alumni (CEBA), and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). In his spare time, he provided pro bono admissions consulting to his students applying to college and graduate schools. He had a passion for life and a kind heart that touched the lives of those around him.

Chris leaves to cherish his life and memories, his loving mother Jayne Schanck Babcock, a dear partner Edgar Molina, a brother Bryan Babcock, two sister/cousins Erna T. Vance and T-la Lowery, two aunties Joslyn Schanck Cooper (Gregory) and Andra Bynum Thomas (Kenneth), one Uncle George P. Schanck III (Wanda) and a host of other cousins, special friends and relatives.  Although Chris has left this world, his spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he leaves behind. He will be remembered for his vibrant personality, his unwavering love, and his profound impact on the lives of others.

Chris will forever remain in the hearts of his family, friends and students. May he rest in peace.
