Mattie Mae Hodge

June 29, 1950 - May 12, 2024

A Celebration of Mattie’s life will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024, at 11am at Colonial Funerals, 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden CT. Viewing in Colonial from 10am-11am. Burial to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia. Condolences may be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.

Mattie Mae Hodge was born in Darlington South Carolina on June 29, 1950 and went to be with her father Mother’s day on May 12, 2024. Mattie was the only girl of four siblings. Mattie is predeceased by her parents, a brother Capell Bacote Sr. of Mississippi, Flegler Billy Bacote of Connecticut, and Julius Bacote also known as “Sonny” of Connecticut. Mattie relocated to Connecticut as an adolescent. She attended Ansonia High School where she received her high school diploma.  Mattie worked various jobs before marrying Ralph Hodge where she later gave birth to Mercedes Lovell Hodge on July 1, 1974. Mattie later married William Edward Vereen and later gave birth to Danielle Selah Vereen on January 9, 1987. Mattie raised Mercedes and Danielle while fostering children in the child protective system. Mattie went on to adopt Shanda and Antenette Patterson -Hodge.

Mattie spent the majority of her life in New Haven CT. Mattie served 20 years as a longtime member of New Life Worship under the covering of Apostle David Mclure Jr. and Pastor Ruthie Mclure.  Mattie was one of the mothers of the church. Mattie participated in church activities by serving her community. Mattie served food to homeless individuals at shelters. Mattie visited nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers ministering to those in need and who were also transitioning from this life.  Mattie encouraged and motivated all those she served. Mattie leaves behind to cherish her legacy a granddaughter Mia Simone Vereen of Meriden CT, two grandsons John James III of Ansonia CT, Wendell Kisam Soctomah of Meriden CT (Native American Maliset Tribe of Canada), two step-daughters Rushnee Yakima Vereen-Penix and Meiline “Malee” Smith of New Britain, CT and hosts of grandchildren.
