In Loving Memory of Patricia Peterson Kelly

In the quiet hours of March 3, 2024, Patricia Peterson Kelly, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, peacefully transitioned from her earthly life to eternal rest.

Born on February 27, 1951, in Jamaica Queens, New York, Pat was the beloved daughter of Essie Mae Peterson and C. Moore. Early years in Queens were followed by schooling, leading her to New Haven, CT, where she graduated from Richard C. Lee High School.

After high school, Pat embraced the joys of motherhood, welcoming sons Willie Henry Peterson on June 13, 1969, and Johnny Ray Peterson on April 20, 1971, with partner Will Sullivan-Telford. A devoted homemaker, Pat later married Evans Sonny Kelly, who lovingly raised her children as his own.

Following family tradition, Pat joined Pitts Chapel and later became part of Glorified Deliverance Center in New Haven under Rev. William Peterson. In 2005, she became a member of New Vision Ministry, serving as an Usher under the guidance of Bishop Bernard Peterson.

After working at Pratt and Whitney for a while, Pat moved to private-duty childcare. She continued her dedication to caregiving by helping disabled adults in a private home, serving as a nurse’s aide at her nephew D.J. Peterson’s company, Community Social Integration (CSI) in Hamden, CT, where she eventually retired.

A woman of many talents, Pat’s green thumb thrived on the terrace of her Waterbury, CT apartment shared with her partner and friend, Kevin Williams. Passionate about saving and shopping, she loved going to Costco and Walmart with her dear friend Nicole Benson. Pat’s love for crochet and culinary skills, especially her famous collard greens, brought joy to those around her.

Pat, both determined and tender, enjoyed family gatherings and cherished those moments. In her final months of illness, she found solace in the dedicated care and unwavering support from her devoted son, Johnny Ray, her sister Jessie Peterson, and the compassionate presence of Olivia Adams, Janelle Cousins, and Donnie McDaniels.

Preceded in death by her parents Essie Mae Peterson and C. Moore, sister Justine Peterson Washington, brothers Clarence and David Peterson, and son Willie Peterson, Pat is survived by her son Johnny Ray Peterson; last living sibling Jessie Lee Peterson; grandchildren Tyrone Arrington, William Bouie, Tia Maynard, Johnnesse Suggs, Johnny Suggs, John’te Suggs, J’Sha’ray Suggs, Rayah Peterson, Saniah Peterson, Mason Dawson, Essie Mae Peterson; great-grandchildren Kaliyah Arrington, London Arrington, Jazlynn Arrington, Pleshette Suggs-Macy, Keith Lopez, and Killian Suggs; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Pat’s warmth, love, and laughter will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. In love and sorrow, the Peterson/Kelly Family celebrates the life of a remarkable woman who will never be forgotten.
